Cyclones Headed To Hoopla Chasing 4A Boy’s Crown

It was another big weekend for the Central Cyclones senior boys basketball team as they easily swept their way to a Regionals championship.

The Cyclones defeated the Martensville Royals 110 - 48 to advance to Hoopla - the provincial high school championships - this coming Thursday - Saturday in Moose Jaw.

For the Cyclones it was a seemingly easy victory after defeating the Notre Dame Hounds 123 - 42 on Friday.

But the scoresheet doesn’t tell the whole story as the Royals offensively persistently pressed to catch up.

“I knew we would have a (decent) game. They’re athletic and they’re a pretty good team. But I think our kids today came out with the thought that we have got to punch our ticket to Hoopla and they came out and they played hard,” Barry Seaborn head coach of the Central Cyclones told MJ Independent in a post game interview.

Seaborn said the Cyclones started out strong in the first quarter of play forcing the Royals to play Central’s game.

Asked if he thought the Cyclones played the type of game they wanted he replied “yeah for the first part. The second half got a little bit sloppy.”

“You’re up by a lot and you turn the ball over a little too much and stuff like that. But I thought we got to do what we wanted to do,” he said.

Asked if he thought the Cyclones played to the calibre of ball they could Seaborn said “we played well. There is room for improvement obviously. But that’s having two practices in two weeks does.”

Job sanctions by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation has limited extracurricular activities including practices and even watching game film off school property.

Asked about the Cyclones being prepped for Hoopla he said the competition is going to be intense.

“There are four really, really good teams that are going to be there so we are going to have to play our best basketball of the year to win that one.”

At best the Cyclones will have seen two of their three opponents - Peacock and Luther College - during the season. Harvest City is expected to be the fourth team but was not confirmed at press time.

“We’ve played Luther we beat them by about eight (points) so that will be a battle.

The Cyclones have “a lot of prep work to do which is unfortunate we couldn’t do. Hopefully this week we will hopefully do a little bit of prep work.”

The prep work is important as all three of the Cyclones most likely opponents for the 4A Boys provincial crown all play different styles of basketball.

Asked if he had anything else to say Seaborn responded “hopefully Hoopla is going to be here.”
