Peacock Senior Girls Are Hoopla Bound

It’s the young team that never gave up and now they are Hoopla bound.

On Saturday afternoon the Peacock Toilers senior girls team defeated the Humboldt Mohawks 72 - 50.

The win when combined with Friday evening’s victory of 77 - 41 over top of Tisdale has the Toilers off chasing the provincial 4A girls crown.

They’ll be joined by two other Moose Jaw teams - the Vanier Spirits and Central Cyclones - with Meadow Lake rounding out the four teams competing.

“I’m incredibly surprised,” Peacock Toilers head coach Brendan Fedoski said when asked by MJ Independent about a young Toilers advancing so far.

At the present time the Toilers have two grade 12s, one grade ten, three grade nines and grade 11s making up the core of the team.

Two of the Grade Nines were added to the roster after the junior girls season ended.

“It was an inexperienced team that has gotten us here. I think earlier on in the season I don’t think it would have had this result. I think they kept their composure throughout the game and we were able to finish off the job.”

Lead by guard Devlynne McClungs 22 point game the Toilers were able to speed past the Mohawks.

Other top scorers for the Toilers were Madison Marktanner with 17 points, Taylor Craik with nine points and Kate Hansen with eight points.

“It’s been a long season. It’s been a lot of growth for everybody. Yeah I’m incredibly proud of them.”

The scoresheet

“It’s been the same message throughout the season. It’s one game at a time. It’s one quarter at a time. We just continue to improve. I’m incredibly proud of the athletes, and just how much they’ve improved,” Fedoski said.

He said it was a team goal to get to Hoopla especially since Moose Jaw is hosting it this year.

“We really want to be part of it.”

About the game against the Mohawks he admitted that the Toilers “did not have their best start but they were resilient, which isn’t always the case. So I am really proud of them to battle through it and get that win at the end of the day.”

A key element of the game is that when under pressure in the first quarter the Toilers managed to hold off the Mohawks.

The score at the end of the First Quarter was Humboldt 16 and Peacock 15.

The Toilers plan to take things one day at a time as the clouds of cancellation grow when it comes to the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation’s battle with the provincial government and the threatened job action to cancel all extracurricular activities including Hoopla.

“It is what it is. It’s completely out of my control,” Fedoski said.

If Hoopla isn’t cancelled the Toilers will be joined by the Vanier Spirits, Central Cyclones and Meadow Lake.
