Cornerstone Edges Out Notre Dame

Story and Photos by Robert Thomas

It was a tightly contested match as the Cornerstone Christian School Falcons managed to edge the visiting Notre Dame Hounds 3 - 1 in senior girls high school action on Tuesday evening.

Played in front of a sparse crowd - there were many other activities happening at the school - the Hounds were hungry to take another match away from the Falcons and just fell short.

The rallies were often lengthy but in the end the Falcons were able to fly out with the win.

The final set scores were 25 - 23, 25 - 18, 21 - 25 and 25 - 22.

“Notre Dame just kept going and kept going and kept going. They played a really consistent game. They attacked us and threw a lot of spinners over and it caught us sleeping a few times,” Falcons head coach Lee Behrns said.

Notre Dame often played a lighter precision game.

“They pick their spots really nicely and I thought they did well in just doing that.”

Behrns said he was happy with the Falcons’ performance on the evening.

“Of course we had lots of energy and then being a pretty light crowd tonight with Notre Dame in town on the bus there and the energy in the building just went down a little bit.”

In total the Falcons had nine fans while Notre Dame showed up with four. An unusual situation for Cornerstone athletics.

To top it off fans on both sides were also quiet for most of the match.

“This weekend we played in a huge tournament in Regina. A 16 team tournament. We were in the gold medal game and stuff and the energy in the building was rocking. Then tonight it was kind of quiet.”

On Tuesday evening Cornerstone was a hive of activity the only problem for the Falcons was it wasn’t at the gym.

“It’s tough to get the girls up,” he said.

“There were lots of things going on. It was kind of a quiet night. But you know what we came and got the job done.”

Despite the close to hearing a pin drop atmosphere of the match Behrns said he was still happy with the outcome.

“I am always happy with this kind of outcome in a close game and the girls bearing down in the end we were missing a few bodies.”

The Falcons were also running on a short bench as there were players out doing other activities.

“A couple of the young girls Izzy (Funston) and Payton (Fisher) played full time on the outside because Kiana (Hrechka) was at hockey and they did awesome. They came in and covered that power spot.”

In other senior girls city volleyball league action Peacock defeated Central 3 - 0.

The set scores were 25 - 13, 25 - 25 - 14 and 25 - 16.
