City Offering Free Organic Dump Weekend For Residential Waste

If you have organic yard waste laying around after cleaning up your yard then the May Victoria Day long weekend is your opportunity to get rid of it at the Moose Jaw landfill for free.

Starting tomorrow, May 22 to May 24 inclusive, the City of Moose Jaw will be offering free tipping for all organic yard waste for residential customers only. The City will not be charging the $10 tipping fee.

The City is requesting that all materials be in clear or orange bags for easier inspection.

Organic yard waste is briefly defined as grass clippings, leaves and tree branches less than one in diameter for purposes of the free tipping day.

People with single axle trailers may use those to bring their organic yard waste to the landfill for free however dual-axle and commercial trucks are not eligible for the fee waiver and will be charged the commercial dumping rate.

Those disposing of non-organic household waste, construction materials and other items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances will be subject to regular landfill fees based on material and weight.

To increase efficiency, the City will create a designated yard waste zone, have staff inspect loads at the entrance and direct vehicles to the appropriate area.

The city reminds residents that according to city bylaw No. 5156, Section 23, tarpaulins are required to secure loads and violations will be issued for loads not secured by a tarp. This will keep roads and streets safe and free of debris.

The landfills hours of operation are - 7:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on Sundays.
