After 40 Years Terry Fox's Legacy Continues

How long has the Terry Fox Run been happening in Moose Jaw?

Since 1981. (There may have been a year or two that there was no official event in Moose Jaw due to not having an organizer).

How much as the run raised here locally?

$137,297.04, including $3,197.05 in 2019

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the initial Marathon of Hope and companies like Adidas, who helped out in the initial run by donating shoes, just issued special shoes which sold out quickly. How does this achievement bode for the memory of Fox and the run?

It speaks to the impact Terry’s legacy continues to have across Canada and the memories many of us carry of his Marathon of Hope. It also speaks to how the Terry Fox Foundation has been able to work with schools to keep Terry’s legacy alive and relevant to younger generations.

After 40 years can you say why the run is still relevant and continuing today?

The Run continues because Terry’s dream of a cure for cancer has not been realized. However, because of money raised by the Terry Fox Foundation, researchers have made significant strides and helped increased the survival rate for many types of cancer.

What is different about this year's run due to COVID - 19?

This year it will be a “Virtual” Terry Fox Run. You are invited to make a donation and go for a Run September 20 with as many family and friends that are permitted while following COVID-19 restrictions. Whether around your neighbourhood, backyard, down the street or around the block. Walk, Ride, Run! More details will be released closer to the Run date regarding how to share your virtual Terry Fox Run.

Although the run will be dispersed across the city could this be a better opportunity to spread the word about Terry Fox and his dream?

An opportunity certainly exists to have Moose Javians walking and running all over our City in support of Terry Fox, and if we are all sharing our journeys there is great potential for added awareness.

The legacy continues 40 years later….

Recently the Bank of Canada was looking for a new photo to put on the $5 bill and Terry Fox was named as a potential candidate what do you think this speaks about Fox's legacy?

There couldn’t be a better choice than Terry Fox for the $5 bill. Terry attempted something that had never been done before and he did it under extreme circumstances, sometimes in excruciating pain. He did not do it for fame or personal gain. He did it because he wanted to fund cancer research. The $5 bill is also an appropriate denomination because at the heart of the Terry Fox Run is the motto “give what you can” – there are no minimum donation amounts in order to get involved.

How does someone participate in this year's run?

You can register at www.terryfox.org/run/ – if you do it before May 31 you will be entered for a chance to win a pair of the Adidas ORION Terry Fox 40th anniversary running shoes.

Can you describe a virtual run - what is it?

See answer 5 – I think it is explained there

Do you have anything to add?

To date over $700 million has been raised by the Terry Fox Foundation, and that money is used to fund research of several types of cancer.
