Repairs Starting On Major Water Main Break

It was a significant water main break near the intersection of 9th Avenue NW and Caribou Street West which flooded the basement of the nearby William Grayson School as well as left either sewer and water flooding into basements as far away as 500 block of Fairford Street. And now despite the frigid arctic like weather the City is set to start the repairs.

In a statement the City said they have started work on the repairs which City expects will take the reamainder of the week to repair. To facilitate repairs 9th Avenue NW is closed from Caribou Street West to Montgomery Street.

The City asks motorists to obey all signage and have patience as the extremely cold temperatures are hampering the repair progress.

The size of the January 13th break is significant enough to affect multiple properties on the 500-1000 blocks between Caribou Street West and Fairford Street West. Numerous homeowners have said their basements have been flooded with either water and/or sewage.

At Monday evening’s Council meeting city engineer Josh Mickelbrough said various factors came together that had water from the water main break enter the sanitary sewer system and flood basements.

At the present time William Grayson School is open and the water which had initially been shut off is now turned back on.

In a letter sent home to parents they were advised “Classes and programs are continuing as much as possible and the 2 classrooms on the lower level have relocated upstairs for now. Obviously all gym and computer room classes are not able to occur at this time. All practices and home games for the basketball teams at WG are also cancelled until further notice.”

Additionally homeowners in the area who are without water there is a trailer with potable water located at the corner of 9th NW and Hochelaga St West - bring your own container - and residents will be allowed to shower at the Kinsmen Sportsplex.
