Mavericks Snare Lynx In Series Opener

The Moose Jaw U13A Carpet One Mavericks Team 1 used their power skating skills to easily defeat the visiting Lumsden Bethune Yellow Lynx 15 - 3 in Game One in the Opening Round of the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League's (SFHL) East Division U13A playoffs.

The Mavericks entered the playoffs with a first place regular season record of 18 wins and two losses.

While the Yellow Lynx were in eighth place with a 0 wins and 20 losses in the regular season.

The Mavericks Sunday evening offensive jugernaut was lead by a seven point outing by Maria Umana (four goals and three assists) the Moose Jaw squad kept seemingly continual pressure on the Lumsden Bethune team.

Kaylee Duzan was also another Mavericks standout wracking up four points from four goals.

The final score was the Mavericks 15 and Yellow Lynx 3.

Despite being the victim of 15 goals Yellow Lynx goaltender Hadley Foster managed to make several key saves to limit the Mavericks from scoring more.

Despite being far behind the Yellow Lynx bench would applaud loudly when Foster made key saves especially in the last half of the third period.

The Yellow Lynx three goals all came on plays where they managed to break past their seemingly fenced off defensive blue line and rushed down ice.

The First Period saw the Mavericks rack up a 6 - 0 lead against the Yellow Lynx.

Sophia Page opened the scoring at the 18:14 mark assisted by Maria Umana.

The Mavericks Finely Faris scored at 17:02 assisted by Leila Olfert.

The Mavericks scored their third goal at 12:03 on an unassisted marker by Olfert.

The fourth Mavericks goal was scored by Quinn Caip at 8:57 assisted by Umana.

Less than a minute later Kaylee Duzan scored at 8:02 assisted by Umana.

The Mavericks sixth and final goal of the first period was scored by Umana at 2:02 with assists going to Ella Campbell and Kenzie Hazel.

The Second Period saw the Mavericks further build on their lead but it also saw the Yellow Lynx score ruining goaltender Carlotte McKee's playoff shutout.

The Mavericks continued to build on their unanswered goal scoring spree 16:56 when Faris scored assisted by Eller Stuehler.

Less than a minute later Umana scored at 16:09 assisted by Hazell.

The ninth Mavericks and final goal of the second period was scored by Duzan at 9:01 assisted by Faris.

A quick break up ice led to the Yellow Lynx's Tori Karakochuk scoring at 5:51 assisted by Paige Gerein shattering McKee's playoff shutout hopes.

The period ended Mavericks 9 and Yellow Lynx 1.

The Third Period saw the Mavericks continue to build up the score but the Yellow Lynx also managed to score two goals in the final period.

Umana scored for the Mavericks at 18:48 assisted by Stuehler.

Stuehler would score an unassisted goal at 16:50.

The Yellow Lynx would score their second goal of the game at 15:19 an unassisted marker by Eva Piller.

The Mavericks responded at 14:48 when Duzan scored. The assist went to Stuehler.

Hazell would score at 10:34 for the Mavericks with Kinley Bender.

The Mavericks’ fourteenth goal of the evening was scored by Umana at 5:28 with assists going to Pyper Stewart and Bender.

The Yellow Lynx would score with less than a minute left in the game when Lina Coccimiglio scored an unassisted marker with 56 seconds left in the game.

Despite having the game well in hand the Mavericks Duzan scored with 26 seconds left in the game. The assist on the goal went to Lindsey Laker.

Game Two in the best of three series is March 1st in Lumsden with a 5:30 pm start.

Game Three, if necessary, is 1:30 pm Sunday March 5th at the Red Knight Arena located at 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

In the U13A SFHL East Division playoffs the Moose Jaw U13A Carpet One Mavericks Team 2 defeated the NW Battleford Sharks 11 - 2 on the Opening Round on Saturday evening.

Game Two in that best of three series is this Saturday March 4th with a 1:15 pm start at the Battleford Arena.

Game Three, if necessary, goes Sunday March 5th at 11:45 am at the Kinsmen Arena.
