Mavericks Sweep Series
It may have been a bit of a nail biter in the final couple of minutes but the Moose Jaw Midget A Mavericks managed to defeat the Regina Renegades 3 - 1 and sweep their best of three games series in two straight games.
The Mavericks who were short goaltender Sydnee Christmann, who was away competing at the Saskathewan high school provincial wrestling championships, never had to rely upon the zamboni driver to win as Schay Campaugh for the second straight game backstopped the team to victory.
The Renegades were the first to find the back of the net when Janelle Haas scored at the 17:44 of the second period. Assists went to Katie Bohach and Sabrina King.
The Mavericks tied it up when Brooklyn Nimegers scored at 10:52 of the second period assisted by Eowyn Stokes and Taryn Sandbeck.
Mavericks captain Kaelyn Logan gave the Mavericks the lead at 15:46 of the third period in a goal assisted by assistant captain Courtney Botterill.
The third period proved slightly emotional as the Renegades tried to tie it up as Regina’s Kristen Price drew a two minute minor at 12:11 but the Mavericks were unable to take advantage of the the opportunity and increase their lead.
The intensity of the game came through as there was coincidental minors assessed to the Mavericks Taylor Luciak and the Renegades Piper Ast at the 8:10 mark.
Moose Jaw would finish off scoring with 1:46 left in the game as Ember DuSomme scored a shorthanded and unassisted goal into an empty net.
The Mavericks will now face the much anticipated league final against the Leroy based East Central Fillies who swept their series against the Prairie Storm Thunder.
Dates have not yet been set for the best of three series league final.
