Mavericks Take Opening Playoff Series in Two Straight Games
Thanks to four first period goals the Moose Jaw Midget A Mavericks defeated the Southeast Gold Wings 7 - 3 on Sunday afternoon to sweep the best of three games series in two games straight.
Fresh off of their 4 - 1 Friday evening victory the Mavericks managed to keep to their game plan on the road and overpower their Midale based opponent in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action.
The first period saw the Mavericks open the scoring at 17:08 on a goal by Lindsey Daniel assisted by Brooklyn Nimegeers and Kaelyn Logan.
The Mavericks struck less than two minutes later on a goal by regular season penalty leader Nikita Halyk assisted by Nimegeers at 15:22.

The Mavericks rounded out the first period scoring at the 9:25 mark in what was the game winning goal by Eowyn Stokes assisted by Halyk and Jadyn Palaschuk.
The second period saw the Mavericks score the insuarance marker at the 10:00 mark on a goal by Taryn Sandbeck assisted by Ember DuSomme.
The Gold Wings managed to finally get on the board just after the Mavericks killed of a penalty at the 7:11 mark on a goal by Emily Frostad assisted by Jesa Colness and Neve Stajniak.
The third period saw the Midale based Gold Wings add their second goal at the 14:08 mark on a goal by Caydence Chapman assisted by Bailey Parr and Triana Stadnyck.
Any hopes of a miracle on ice recovery for the Gold Wings was extinguished at the 10:15 mark when Nimegeers scored unassisted.
Midale though would not give up when Parr scored an unassisted goal at 8:27.
The scoring was rounded out by the Mavericks’ Ember DuSomme with 2:09 left in the game assisted by Kami Schumack and Mavericks’ captain Logan.
Mavericks head coach Mike Botterill said the Mavericks played well and the scores in the two games did not reflect the actual effort.
“The team played well both games . We outshot the Goldwings by a fair margin both games and the scores should have been even larger for us but that’s how it goes sometimes,” Botterill said.
“Our first game against them we only played with 11 skaters and today’s game we had 12 skaters . The girls were getting pretty tired. Two of our highest scorers weren’t in the line up but the team responded well and stepped up in their absence.”
“We will continue to work on the same things in practice that we’ve done all season. Basic hockey, keeping it simple. It’s worked for us so far! Hopefully we can get all three skaters that missed the series back at some point for the next series against Regina,” Botterill said.
At press time the dates and times for the next best of three series have yet to be decided.
