Police Clarify Grace Period Rules In School Zones

On June 24, 2024, an amended traffic bylaw was passed at City Council to reduce the speed limit from 40 km/h to 30 km/h in school zones in Moose Jaw.

The reduced speed limit will not be reflected in playground zones without a school, which will remain at 40 km/h.

The amended bylaw will now be in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week.

The City of Moose Jaw has begun installing new signposts and signage around school zones to reflect the recent changes. The signage update project for all of Moose Jaw’s elementary and high schools will take an estimated 2 months to complete.

During the city’s installation period, the Moose Jaw Police Service will be offering a grace period in school zones that have newly installed 30 km/h signage, in an effort to educate the public on the new school zones' speed restrictions.

Officers will continue to issue tickets if the vehicle's speed is in excess of the previously posted 40 km/h school zone.

The Grace Period will continue until September 3, 2024. At this time, officers will enforce all zones according to the posted signage at that location.

Though elementary and high schools have concluded for the summer, motorists are reminded to use caution when in a school zone, as children may be present.
