For a second year in a row it’s a mixed bag statistically for crime in Moose Jaw as Statistics Canada has released the Crime Severity Indexes.
In 2023 the Crime Severity Index (CSI) went down from 2022 where the CSI was 120.90 to 116.61 in 2023 or 3.55 percentage drop. (See graph below)

A large part in the drop in the overall CSI in Moose Jaw is due to the drop in the Non-Violent Crime Severity Index (NVCSI).
Non-violent crimes reported to the Moose Jaw Police Service in 2023 dropped from 129.35 in 2022 to 122.82 in 2023 or a 5.05 drop in the NVCSI.
The Violent Crime Severity Index (VCSI) for 2023 was 103.54 from 102.31 in 2022.
This represents a 1.20 percent increase in the VCSI in 2023 from 2022.
The CSI’s are indexes where crimes are given weighted numbers based upon their severity. It works on the premise that not all crimes are equal in their severity.
The CSI takes into account both of volume and the severity of crimes.
For instance a person who steals your shovel under a system simply counting the number of crimes would be equal to the criminal then using the shovel to beat a neighbour with it.
Under the CSI reporting system both crimes are not equal and are given different weights.
