Thefts From Sheds And Garages Continue - Police Offer Advice To Help Prevent
Your rakes, hoes, shovels, recyclables or anything else you store in your garden sheds and garages continued to be prime time targets in the month of April as warmer Spring weather brought the thieves out in search of easy loot.
According to the Moose Jaw Police Service monthly statistical report for April other break and enters dropped from March to April but thefts were still occurring.
In April 2024 there were four other break and enters compared to April 2023 when there was 13 other break and enters.
The overall annual trend so far though is an increase in the number of other break and enters.
By the end of April 2023 there had been 29 other break and enters compared to 31 in the first four months of 2024 for a 6.9 percent increase.
Both 2023 and 2024 had a major increase in people breaking into garages, storage sheds and out buildings compared to the period of January 2022 - April 30, 2022 when there was only 11 such crimes reported.
In the past MJ Independent asked MJPS chief Rick Bourassa why thieves would steal such items as garden rakes and shovels.
Chief Bourassa said at that time everything had a value with a potential of being stolen.
To help combat and reduce the amount of thefts to sheds, garages and outbuildings the MJPS has provided a set of helpful tips on its Facebook page to help prevent it.
