Man Facing Firearm And Drug Charges Makes First Court Appearance

Accused will have a bail hearing this coming Friday.

A man facing firearms and drug charges will be spending at least a few more days in jail pending a bail hearing.

Appearing by telephone in Moose Jaw Provincial Court from the Regina Correctional Centre on Tuesday morning Randy Payton is facing drug and firearms/ammunition charges.

Making his first court appearance Payton was told the criminal charges stem from allegations on December 29th and November 14th, 2022.

On December 29th the allegations against Payton are:

• Unlawful possession of fentanyl and crystal methamphetamine.

• Possessing a loaded prohibited weapon - a sawed off Marlin lever action rifle.

• Possession of ammunition when prohibited from doing so.

• Being the occupant of a vehicle with a prohibited weapon where other passengers were not lawfully able to possess the weapon.

• Possessing a weapon for a purpose dangerous to the public peace.

• Breach of probation.

  On November 14th the allegations against Payton are:

• Failure to attend Court.

• Possession of two 12 Guage shotgun shells when prohibited to do so.

  Both Crown Prosecutor Suzanne Young and Provincial Crown Prosecutor Rob Parker opposed the accused's release.

  Legal Aid lawyer Suzanne Jeanson requested a bail report to be prepared because “a bail report might be helpful to Mr Payton.”

  Judge Daryl Rayner ordered the bail report and set the matter over to Friday January 6th when a bail hearing will be held.

  As with all accused Payton is to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
