Local Terry Fox Run Raises More Funds In 2021 Than Last Year
If raising more money than in the past couple of years is a measure of success then the 2021 edition of the Terry Fox Run has hit it out of the ball park.
In figures released on Monday the run - held on September 19th in the Wakamow Valley - continued its’ three year climb locally in the amount of money raised for the Terry Fox Foundation.
In the 41 years since its inception the Run has raised $850 million for cancer related initiatives. Last year the Foundation provided $21.3 million for cancer research.
The run was started after the one legged Terry Fox set out crossing Canada by running the equivalent of a marathon daily to raise funds for cancer research in 1980. Fox unfortunately succumbed to cancer and did not finish the cross Canada run where he set a goal of raising $1 from every Canadian for research to find the cure for cancer.
“We are thrilled with this year’s fundraising total and can’t thank Moose Javians enough for their support,” Craig Hemingway, Moose Jaw Terry Fox organizer said in a statement.
This year the local run raised $4,700 or $1,000 more than the $3,700 raised in last year’s event and it was also $1500 more than the $3238 raised in 2019.
Hemingway stated he wanted to thank the local team - including Stephanie Meyer and Kerri Thiele - who helped make the 2021 Run a success through their volunteer hours.
He also wished to thank the assistance the local run received from the Terry Fox Foundation offices in Regina as well as the national office for the support they provide to the local runs.
