If you have received an e-mail from your bank asking you to provide a photo or a scan of your drivers license it is best to disregard the request as there is an active on-line scam at the present time.

SGI has issued a warning that they have been made aware of an unknown person(s) who have been sending e-mails impersonating financial institutions seeking the details from your drivers license.

In a news release SGI has advised “If you get a request like that, take steps to verify that the request is coming from a trusted source before providing any personal information. Be sure to use publicly listed contact information, not a phone number or email address included in the suspect email.”

SGI has also requested that if someone has already provided the information that they inform SGI. You can have your SGI information password protected. In order to do so, customers will have to go to any SGI motor licence issuing office.

If you have provided this information to someone who shouldn’t have it, you should contact the police and take steps suggested by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Drivers license information can be used for a wide assortment of fraudulent activities including obtaining fake identification as well as credit.
