Storm Leaves Many Area Highways Closed
If you were hoping to head out onto the highway this morning you might be advised to reconsider the move as a large number of area highways are closed or travel is not recommended by the Saskatchewan Department of Highways.
As of 4:00 am numerous roads leading out of Moose Jaw, as well as throughout the province, were closed due to a blizzard which developed as a result of a clipper weather system that blew into the area yesterday.
The storm created treacherous road conditions throughout the province with the northwest area of the province the hardest hit with even grid and gravel roads unpassable.
The storm which saw high winds gusting at times to 110 km/hr was still listed as a Blizzard Warning at 4 am by Environment Canada although the wind had died down considerably.
The local forecast calls for clouds later in the morning with a chance of flurries and the potential for blowing snow with winds gusting up to 70 km/hr.
The treacherous conditions have also lead to a cooler evening for residents in the Aylesbury, Craik, Davidson, Girvin, Bladworth and surrounding areas as due to a major power outage that SaskPower was unable to send repair crews out to due to the severe weather. For safety reasons the power will remain off for the night. Crews will attempt to head out at approximately 5:00am.
Some areas of South Hill and Sunningdale reported power outages, there is no ETA as to when power would be restored.
The City of Moose Jaw is set to update whether or not Moose Jaw Transit will be operating this morning by 7:00 am.
