What You Can And Cannot Put In Your Blue Bin

Now that the Christmas gifts have been unwrapped the question is for many people what to do with the wrapping paper as well as the packaging from the gifts.

Exactly what can you put in the blue recycle bin and what you can toss into the trash.

Recently the City’s contracted recycler, Loraas Disposal, changed what it will accept in the blue bin or recycling program.

Loraas Disposal, will accept plastics numbered 1-7, with the exception of:

- “Clam shell”-type food containers (typically found with berries, pastries, etc.)

- Plastic cling wrap (i.e. Saran Wrap)

- Plastic bags (single-use shopping bags, etc.) Those items previously accepted as recycling must now be diverted to your waste stream (garbage bin).

Additionally the following items not accepted in the recycling stream:

- Styrofoam

- Ceramics

- Light bulbs

- Soiled cardboard

- Hazardous chemical containers

- Scrap metal

- Car parts

- Plastic toys

- Household garbage

A mail out was sent to all households - this is what they accept

From your usual Christmas packaging the following CAN NOT be recycled but must be disposed of in the trash:

– Wrapping paper

– Tape

– Plastic packaging WITHOUT the Recycling symbol

– Ribbons

– Bows

The City reminds residents it is important that all material going into the recycling bin be clean and free of tape, food stains, food residue, etc.

The City also reminds residents that old electronics, among other items, can be taken to SARCAN.

If you have an excess of acceptable cardboard, paper and plastics, you can dispose of the items at the City recycle bins on High Street West between the City Complex and Yara Centre.

The City of Moose Jaw will once again offer alternatives for disposing of your natural Christmas tree.

Residents may drop off their natural Christmas trees in the parking lot of the Bike Park west of Yara Centre (1220 High St. West) anytime after December 26th, OR you can leave your Christmas tree near your waste collection bin and they will be picked up by collection crews, beginning January 20, 2020, in Zone 1.
