Wing In The New Year Returns This Year Offering Para Transit Service
It is a New Year’s tradition that is in its 31st year where SGI and the City of Moose Jaw offer free bus service on New Years Eve to allow anyone who may be drinking a safe ride home.
But unlike other years the 2020 edition of “Wing In the New Year” it is once again expanded to include those with special needs so they can safely get out to the celebrations like everyone else.
“That’s awesome,” said a pleasantly surprised Mike Bachiu chair of the Special Needs Advisory Committee when asked what he thought about the City extending the service to include Para Transit buses again this year.
“We did not ask for it, it wasn’t through our committee in any way but it is a good idea,” Bachiu said.
“It’s great people can partake in any New Year’s celebration they want to without relying on expensive taxis or friends and family and they have the dignity of independence,” Bachiu stated.
“Wing In The New Year is where FREE transportation is offered in a partnership between SGI and the City of Moose Jaw.
The FREE service operates from 7:55 pm December 31st to 3:15 am January 1st 2020.
This year the buses will not only will see Moose Jaw Transit make all regular stops across the city, special pickups will be made on 1st Avenue Northwest to accommodate New Year’s celebrations at Mosaic Place.
Para Transit is also available for free. To pre-book this service call Moose Jaw Transit: 306-694-4488 or email: transit@MooseJaw.ca.
As part of this year’s campaign there will also be an on-line “Safe Ride Selfie” contest where everyone using the free transit service is encouraged to take a selfie and post it with the hashtag #CityMJSafeRide on Twitter or Instagram for a chance at winning prizes like free Moose Jaw Transit passes and gift cards to local businesses.
“We’re excited to offer free transit rides and the chance at winning a prize for making a wise decision about how to get home safe,” Moose Jaw Mayor Fraser Tolmie said in a statement. “The holiday season is about enjoying time with friends and family, and we’re looking forward to Moose Jaw Transit being a good “Wingman” on New Year’s Eve.”
“We want everyone to enjoy their New Year’s Eve, but we also want everyone to make it home safe,” Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said in a release. “So, while you’re planning your festivities, also plan ahead for a safe ride home. SGI is proud to sponsor ‘Wing in the New Year’ as another great option.”
