Free Yard Waste Weekend Delayed A Week

If you needed a few more days for the leaves to fall and then to rake them up you are in luck as Free Yard Waste Weekend has been postponed for one week.

Initially scheduled for the weekend of October 19 and 20 the opportunity to dump domestic organic waste has been delayed until the following weekend if October 26 and 27.

The reason for the one week postponement was because the weather was not conducive to the leaves fall and organic yard waste being collected, said Craig Hemingway communications manager with the City of Moose Jaw.

For many years the City has waved the tipping fee at the landfill to allow residents to dispose of waste around their yard. In April the City changed to waving the tipping fee on organic waste only ss the landfill nears its end of lifespan.

“We understand a lot of organic waste occurs and this allows them to get rid of it,” Hemingway said.

During regular hours Saturday the 26th from 7 am to 8 pm and on Sunday the 27th from 10 am to 5 pm Moose Jaw residents can bring half ton truck or a single axle trailer of organic yard waste free to landfill.

In order to qualify for waking thr tipping fee all loads must be from residential properties only and all loads may only be half ton or a single axle trailer towed behind light vehicles. Dual axle or commercial vehicle loads will be assessed the regular tipping fee.

Those disposing of non-organic household waste, construction materials and other items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances, will be subject to regular landfill fees based on material and weight.

It should be noted the landfill is cash only.

When entering the landfill employees will direct landfill to the designated organic yard waste area. Staff will be on hand to ensure the load is organic yard waste only.

Any load deemed not to be organic yard waste will be assessed the regular tipping fee.

The City reminds residents that according to city bylaw No. 5156, Section 23, tarpaulins are required to secure loads and violations will be issued for loads not secured by a tarp. This will keep roads and streets safe and free of debris.

Anyone caught entering the landfill without a tarped load will be subject to a fine.

There are no plans to cancel the weekend tipping holiday if the weather turns bad.

“As long as there are safe conditions it will go ahead. The event will proceed if the conditions are safe,” Hemingway said.
