Rain On Canola

A late afternoon lightning storm and accompanying rain shower - sans hail or the big white combine - brought much needed relief at the prime to a canola crop on the edge of Moose Jaw.

Lightning fixates nitrogen in the air allowing it to be used by plants. Nitrogen is a key soil nutrient lacking in most Saskatchewan farm lands. For farmers rain (moisture) and nitrogen are to of the most critical and often lacking crop nutrients.

With the temperatures predicted to be in the 30 degree Celsius range for the next week the cool loving canola crop is likely to enjoy the approximately half an inch of rain from this shower. Additionally the moisture arrived at the key flowering stage which potentially could lead to a higher yield.
