Moose Javians In For A Comic Marathon Treat This Friday

Two shows unite to deliver double the comedians and laughs

If this wasn’t a “serious” affair this coming Friday evening might be best described as the movies Highlander and the Sound Of Music morphed together into one hilarious evening with the winners Moose Jaw’s comedy fans.

If not then the city is about to be set upon with a week of promotion it has not seen the likes of well…ever.

For Garret DeLaurier, best known in the local comedy world as the man behind Moose Jam Comedy, Friday evening was suppose to be the re-start of his dream of making Moose Jaw a regular stop for well known improv comics as well as local talent trying to make it into the art of laughter.

The re-start comes after DeLaurier never lost his shirt and delivered with a massive show featuring well known Canadian comic Tim Nutt at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre.

After that performance it seemed DeLaurier was unstoppable unless something massive like a semi hit him.

Unfortunately for DeLaurier a truck with a license plate reading COVID - 19 hit that dream with a thud.

But like most comics who have to deal with hecklers DeLaurier has shrugged that off and is about to re-start that dream again.

A dream which will see Moose Jam Comedy unite with fellow Moose Jaw comedy promoter (Corey Rokosh) Comedy By Bubs this Friday May 27th at Timothy Eaton Gardens for a comedy marathon affair featuring seven comedians.

“I didn’t know he was putting on a comedy show the same night I was planning to. At a certain time we were unaware of each others plans,” DeLaurier told MJ Independent while enjoying a late lunch at the Burger King.

“It did not make any sense for both of us to have a show on the same night and I could not cancel so we got together and decided to work together on a massive show announcing live comedy was back in Moose Jaw.”

DeLaurier sounded sincere explaining how he had always making jokes way back in high school and how comedy was something which could help fill the gap of no entertainment locally for the 30 - 55 year old crowd.

“There are a lot of things for younger people and seniors but nothing really for people just over 30 I think comedy and a good laugh is part of the solution.”

About joining together instead of competing against one another like in Highlander DeLaurier said it made more sense plus it would lead to a massive comedy show for local comedy fans.

“He has great qualities and things he brings which make it not only just better for both of us but at the same time the real winners in all of this are the fans of comedy who are in for a real treat.”

Uniting together will see a show now having seven standup comedians performing.

Many of the seven are local Saskatchewan talent but there is going to be a headliner - Herbert Henries - who has gained Canadian comedy fame on the tv reality program Canada’s Got Talent.

Check out Henries audition video below.

Also appearing on the comedy will be:

  • Dani Albert

  • Dani Hedin

  • Shawn Cuthand

  • Cindy Rivers

  • Robin Monuik

  • Preston Fontana

  • Scott Porteous

Despite adding additional comedy to the show the price of the laughs is not going up and will be the same $20. Inflation it seems has not impacted stand up comedy.

DeLaurier advises the show is not a family one but will feature some adult comedy.

“The event is to cater to the older audience and not the younger audience,” he said about the licensed affair, adding “the show is not going to be clean but it is not going to be filthy either.”

Asked about any hopes for the show and future shows helping to bring people to the Downtown core for entertainment and an evening out DeLaurier said it is something he hopes to accomplish.

“I am hoping we can create an environment where people not only come to shows but also at the same time comedians with Saskatchewan roots stop in,” he said going on to add Brent Butt and Tom Green as two comedians on his radar.

But first there is this Friday evening’s show and the need to see success after the pandemic.

“One hundred percent we are starting to getting it going again. We lost a little bit of the steam because of the pandemic but not all of it. With the pandemic it just let some air out of the tires but we are pumping up and rolling again…people want to come out to events and laugh again after having nothing for two years.”

So where does the movie The Sound Of Music tie into all of this?

Well it has to tie in with DeLaurier taking promotion into his own hands and that is all this coming week he will be dressed up in either Lederhosen or as a sailor as he yodels Downtown to bring in ticket sales.

DeLaurier will have tickets on him for purchase the cost is $20 plus taxes making the total price $22.25.
