Seedy Sunday To Kick Off Gardening Season
It may be at least a couple of months until you are able to work in the garden - but you never know with the weather - but despite that gardening for 2020 is about to kick off semi-officially in Moose Jaw this Sunday. If it has not already with some people having planted their seedlings indoors in a varierty of containers for the season.
From 10 am to 2 pm Sunday March 8th the Moose Jaw Public Library is putting on their annual Seedy Sunday.
To be held in the public reading room just to the right of the Library’s mezzanine lobby the event offers a lot for the local gardner.
Seedy Sunday is an event which has grown throughout the years to what it is today a small trade fair where seed and other vendors are on site, there is information exchanges between those with green thumbs and those without as well as a variety of activities for the kids. And yes books, of course books it is a library after all.
“Seedy Sunday is where we are going to have seed vendors. They are going to be gathering and selling their seeds and exchange their seeds. People can also come down and bring their seeds to if they want to exchange them,” said Christina Hinds with the Moose Jaw Public Library.
As part of the event the MJPL will also have their seed library.
“There are seeds there where you can actually borrow seeds and then you have to bring back the seeds in the Fall,” Hinds said. Donations of seeds to the Library’s seed library are also welcomed. “It is your own little seeds where you can plant your garden and all other things.”
As part of the event there is a free door prize draw which will be giving out seeds and a couple of books as prizes.
“As part of the raffle we have two books donated by Friends of the Library and we will also have some seeds donated by some of the vendors,” she said, assing “There is going to be seeds there that people can buy or exchange. Just come and check it out there is a lot of ideas. Come and get some gardening inspiration.”
“You can come down and get some ideas, get some advice, talk to anybody. I am a learning gardner myself so I am excited to to be able to learn. Just ask. You can ask some of the vendors about it, there will be a lot of information there,” Hinds said.
Hunger In Moose Jaw will also be in attendance and talking about their community gardens. Community gardens are where people can rent garden plots if they do not have a garden where they live.
“With their community gardens it is where anybody in the community can have a plot and have the opportunity to plant whatever they want for produce.”
Whether you have a garden plot or just a few containers there is information available for whatever type of garden you may have.
In addition to the seed vendors there will also be people involved in composting.
Four Grounds, a Downtown coffee shop located on the main floor of the Scott Block will also be holding a pop up sale where they will be selling coffee as well as drinks.
The Wandering Market, Mixed Greens, Mic’d as well as Post Horizon Booksellers will also be in attendance.
If you have children Tina Dolcetti, MJPL childrens librarian said there will be crafts and activities to not only keep your child (pre-school to age 12) busy while you are at the event but also engage their minds in garden themed acivities.
“It is basically to keep the kids busy while mom and dad are shopping for seeds,” Dolcetti said of the crafts which will feature sunflowers, watermellon and flowered themes.
Admission for Seedy Sunday is free.
As an added note Hinds wanted to point out that the event starts before the Library is open for the day (1 pm - 5 pm) so if you want to attend Seedy Sunday as well as visit the Library on the same trip plan your day accordingly.
