Provincial Cutting Horse Competition This Weekend
This weekend is set to be a busy one at the Moose Jaw Exhibition is hosting a provincial horse show and competition.
The Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Assiciation will be hosting their annual show and competition along with their awards night at the Golden Mile Arena located on the Exhibition Grounds (250 Thatcher Drive East).
Running from 10 am to approximately 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am until approximately 3 pm the show will feature the 50 best horse and riders in cutting horse riding in Saskatchewan.
The competition does not involve the roping of cattle to separate a cow from the herd but relies on the skills of the horse and rider to block the animal from returning to the herd.
Cutting horse riding is a Western style event in which the horse and rider work together in front of a judge to separate a cow from herd of cattle.
After the cow is separated from the herd it must be held away from the herd for a set amount of time.
The sport centers around the horse's ability to perform the task and the rider's ability to get the horse to do that.
George Fowler general manager for the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company said the event is set to not just bring in approximately 50 participants but the majority of the competitors are from outside the Moose Jaw area.
The event is FREE to attend and the public is welcome.
With the Province repealing the pandemic mandates the event will not require the wearing of masks but anyone who wants to wear a mask are welcome to do so.
Additionally for those who want a coffee or a snack the concession will be open.
Following Saturday's event the Association will also be holding their awards night for last year.
Asked about the event's potential impact to Moose Jaw's event driven tourist economy Fowler said “there will be good economic spin-offs for local hotels, restaurants and gas stations.”
