Moose Jaw Recognized As An Age Friendly Community
Moose Jaw is one of three Saskatchewan communities who are receiving recognition as age friendly communities.
It is all about community engagement and action.
And no it isn’t about rolling up the sidewalks after 9 pm each evening but rather its partially for the efforts to make the sidewalks more accessible - well lit and in good shape.
In a news release Moose Jaw was named along with Regina and Kipling and area were given recognition by the provincial government and the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism (SSM).
"I congratulate the recipients of today's Age-Friendly recognition on their efforts to consider the needs of seniors and older adults, and how their communities can play a role in enhancing their quality of life," Minister of Seniors Everett Hindley said in a statement.
"Our government supports the Age-Friendly Communities initiative, which promotes healthy, accessible and inclusive communities, where everyone is valued and supported."
Moose Jaw received the recognition for:
establishing an Age-Friendly Committee;
securing the support of municipal government;
assessing the community, determining where Age-Friendly initiatives are needed; and
developing, publicizing and implementing an action plan.
By developing these measures the release stated the three communities are more inclusive and everyone in the community benefits.
Age-Friendly Communities is a global movement with a goal of making communities safer, smarter, healthier, happier, more inclusive places for all people to live and thrive.
The SSM says there are now 15 communities in the province with Age Friendly Committees.
