Norway Day This Friday

It is part of an agreement to avert “war” with a municipality in Norway and the City of Moose Jaw is going to hold up to their end of the bargain this Friday.

On Friday the Friendly City will be celebrating Norway Day.

Norway Day is part of the settlement to end “hostilities” between Stor-Elvdal, Norway and Moose Jaw in a dispute over who had the largest moose in the world. The dispute ended up garnering massive international media attention for Moose Jaw and Stor-Elvdal wrapping up with a moose summit. The Norwegians were the first to ask for a truce.

The tongue in cheek battle saw people raise money to help give Mac the Moose a new rack and also saw $25,000 donated to the cause from Moosehead Brewery.

As part of the local festivities there will be a Toonie (scrambled eggs and sausage) breakfast held out at the Tourism Moose Jaw Visitor Centre - 450 Diefenbaker Drive - from 8 am to 9 am. There will be a public ceremony at 8:30 am with the raising of the Norwegian flag.

The A.E. Peacock vocal jazz choir will also perform at the ceremony.

“We encourage all Moose Javians to participate in Norway Day,” Mayor Fraser Tolmie said in a news release.

“Join us for the breakfast, decorate your home or business or simply wear Norwegian colours (blue, red and white). We are proud of the relationship established with ourNorwegian friends and hope that Norway Day will help make that relationship even stronger and lead to future partnerships,” the Mayor stated in the release.
