Library Offering Lots Of Free Activities For The Kids
By Annie MacLeod
The Moose Jaw Public Library is offering a variety of free activities to help keep kids busy as the cold weather sets in.
A table full of crafts features everything kids need to make their own ornaments and hang them on the library’s Christmas tree.
Children’s Librarian Tina Dolcetti has been enjoying watching the little ones fill the tree with their very own creations.
“So if you’d like to help us with decorating and make this your own community living room, please come in and do that,” Dolcetti said. “We’re really excited about it.”
Dolcetti points out that, aside from being a fun way to escape the cold, doing crafts with your kids can also have lasting benefits.
“Making Christmas ornaments helps kids develop fine motor coordination skills, which later helps with the development or writing and reading skills later on.”
The library also offers a selection of board games to play in the family-friendly atmosphere, which also includes a comfortable area specifically for breastfeeding. Kids can also enjoy computer games, puzzles and of course a wide selection of books.
“It’s nice to come in and do stuff that’s fun and free, because having kids is expensive,” Dolcetti said. “One of the predictors of literacy and educational success is actually not income, it’s how much time you spend together as a family doing fun and free things.”
The library also offers free family movies including The Nightmare Before Christmas on Wednesday, December 18 from 6:30-8:30 PM.
