City Cleaning Up Dozens Of Broken Trees Due To Heavy Wet Sticky Snow
The large number of City owned trees that are broken had one Councillor asking if the City was looking to hire contractors to lend a hand to clean up the mess. The trees suffered damage due to heavy and wet snowfall accumulating on them and the weight causing the damage.
“Both streets I could travel down today I noticed there were numerous trees laying everywhere. Do we use outside contractors to assist with that? Because I am sure there are going to be lots of that. And it will be awhile for City crews to clear all of those trees that are going to be on the boulevards and sidewalks and he streets,” Councillor Blanc asked Administration.
Parks and recreation director Derek Blais responded the City is calling in contractors to assist with the dozens of broken trees littering the community due to the heavy wet snow,
“it has definitely been a hectic 36 hours here since the onset of the snow and we’;ve had over 200 requests for service for trees that are down so it is going to take some time to clean that up. We have reached out to a few contractors today. None were available today but we have been able to secure a few tomorrow…particularly to assist with the trees that are damaging property right now,” Blais said.
The cleanup is expected to take weeks to finisn.
“There has been a number of trees that have fallen on roofs, fences, vehicles. So anything that is a safety concern we are bringing them in to assist and we will have to chip away at it over the next few weeks,” he said.
