Enquiry Asked About State Of Crescent Park Serpentine

Crescent Park might be a jewel in the Downtown’s crown but the state of the Serpentine Creek that runs through it leaves a lot to be desired right now according to a councillor.

Asking an enquiry about the state of the Serpentine Creek Councillor Doug Blanc inferred the creek has a lot of undesirable qualities when compared to the rest of the park.

“I would be Downtown at Crescent Park with my grandchildren and the park was absolutely beautiful except for the Serpentine Creek. And I am just wondering if anything is going to be done for it?” Councillor Blanc asked.

I know when I was living out at the farm my dugout was not as ugly as that thing (Serpentine Creek) is right now.

Acting Parks and Recreation Director Scott Osmachenko said the department was working on a long term solution to the condition of the creek.

“Dredging is what we do every Spring so the area from the Amphitheatre, the waterfall and a little bit further down was dredged unfortunately that area does drain from the street,” Osmachenko said. “So all of that fine silt gets into it and it slowly works its way…the only way to solve that is to dredge and take all that fine silt out.”

He said the department was “working on a project but it can’t be done each year, just certain sections will be done that will help with that buildup and that algae and that growth in there.”

Osmachenko said it was a “long term goal” the Parks and Recreation Department is working towards with the assistance of Public Works and Engineering - who have the equipment to dredge and dump trucks to haul the silt away with.
