Lights On Manual Until The End Of Summer

It is an intersection that is getting a lot of attention and it is getting even more as traffic has been backing up due to the road sensors not being replaced after the traffic light controls were upgraded.

Councillor Dawn Luhning enquired about the traffic light controls for the intersection of 9th Avenue NW and Caribou Street West.

“The lights again at 9th and Caribou West and the length of time traffic is sitting at one side. It seems to be quite a bit longer than it was before,” Councillor Luhning said.

“I know that things change and we upgrade and move towards different times for different traffic but we also use to have sensors up there so when we came up to there so when we came up to the intersection and there was nobody else there the light would change right away.”

Councillor Luhning asked if anything could be done to rectify the situation for better traffic flow.

City Engineer Bevan Harlton said the sensors had not been reinstalled in the road way yet as the cast iron water main replacement program was set to dig up the intersection in the next few weeks.

“That construction is done with the exception of the inductive loops which run the sensors for the lights. When cast iron goes through and we rip that road out to put the new water main in then after that when the road structure is rebuilt we will put the inductive loops in the road,” Harlton said. “It is in the works but we won’t put those in the ground until after cast goes through.

He said until the cast iron water main is replaced – expected to be completed by the end of Summer (six to eight weeks) – the lights at the intersection will be on a manual timer.

The manual timer means the lights will be slower until the loops are replaced, Harlton said.
