Cash Only Policy At The Landfill Questioned
The issue of a cash only policy at the City of Moose Jaw landfill came up on Monday night when Councillor Scott McMann responded to a query he had made to Administration.
Councillor McMann’s February 25, 2019 question to Administration had been “Is there a timeline or plan to accept alternative to cash types of payments (cards) at the landfill and perhaps other City locations that accept cash only payments?”
Responding to the report Councillor McMann expressed disappointment the landfill had no current plans to move away from cash only. The report outlined other areas in the City where there were moves towards cash only payments.
“There is no plan to expand our payment options (at the landfill) I find that disappointing,” he said.
In response city manager Jim Puffalt said the reason for the cash only policy at the landfill was it had no Internet connectivity.
“(There is) an issue with the Internet and connectivity…there is an opportunity to put up a booster there,” Puffalt replied.
In order to use Interac (debit) cards or credit cards there needed to be an Internet connection to allow the transactions to take place, Puffalt expalined.
The report stated the Engineering Department was working towards establishing not only Internet connectivity but also the potential need to upgrade the landfill scale software as well as the City’s cash receipting software to allow debit and credit cards to be used as payment options along with cash.
