Badminton Districts Go Off Without A Hitch

It was supposed to last until perhaps 6 PM but the district badminton championships went so smoothly they were all but done by 4 PM.

Held on Saturday at Peacock Collegiate the district badminton championships featured for the first time feature both seniors and bantams (Grade Nines) at a single venue.

“We were shocked it actually went great,” event organizer Lee Behrns said, adding “we were wondering if we were going to be done by 5 PM or 6 PM but we’re looking at the clock right now and it’s just coming up to 4 PM. So we are in really good shape.”

Behrns said although the bleachers look for near the end of the district championships that first thing in the morning they were totally full.

“It’s just great to see,” he said.

He said although there was no real surprises in how Moose Jaw players faired at districts it was one of those things “you never know” about until it’s over.

For a majority of the competitors they had met each other before at the badminton invitational so it was obvious how things would end up for the most part, he said.

“Some of the favourites won coming in (to the competitions). Some of the champions from last year continued their reign but overall when we walked in here at 10 o’clock, the stands at Pracock (Collegiate) were packed right full with people.”

Gold and silver medallists in the five seniors competitions are now off to Regina next weekend for regionals.

Bantam players seasons are now done as there is no play following districts for them.
