Your Moose Jaw Warriors overcame an early tempest from the Lethbridge Hurricanes, ramped up the offense and cruised to a comfortable victory on Wednesday night.

The game started half an hour later than usual as the Enmax Centre streamed the Team Canada game on the videoboard for the 2,947 people in attendance.

Team Canada won the game, defeating the Americans and advancing to the finals of the World Juniors, where they will meet the red hot Czech Republic team that beat them earlier in the tournament.

The Hurricanes’ top scorer, Jett Jones, put his team in front in the 7th minute, netting his 15th of the campaign.

But whatever blast of hope his team took from the goal was quickly erased by a barrage of Moose Jaw offense.

Defenceman Maximus Wanner scored the first one on a fast break. Lynden Lakovic moved the puck up ice to Brayden Yager, who slid the puck across to the streaking Wanner. Wanner finished the sequence for his seventh goal of the season.

Atley Calvert scored 5 minutes later to put the Warriors in front, another fast break. The Warriors never looked back.

Calvert was fantastic on the night scoring two goals and adding two assists, for a rare four point night.

He was named the game’s First Star for his efforts.

Of course, those assists come easy when you’ve got a line-mate who can finesse them past the opposition goaltender, as was the case with Eric Alarie, who scored a pair of goals himself and was named the game’s Second Star.

The Warriors had a 4-1 lead half way through period 2 but slowly the Hurricanes began picking at that lead.

Goals by Anton Astashevich and Chase Pauls made it a one goal game. It was Alarie’s second goal that squashed Lethbridge’s resistance.

The Warriors remained stalwart and held on to the lead, winning 5-3. Wanner, Denton Mateychuk and Ryder Korczak also had multi-point nights. Connor Ungar made 19 saves in the victory.

With the two goals Atley Calvert surpassed Brayden Yager and is now the team’s second leading goal scorer, with 19. Jagger Firkus leads the club with 21, Yager has 18 and Ryder Korczak is working his way into the mix with 13.

The Warriors next game will be at home on Friday, against the visiting Calgary Hitmen.
