Caronport Hangs On Against Vanier Comeback
Photos and Story By Robert Thomas
A fourth quarter surge wasn’t enough to erase the deficit as the Caronport Cougars defeated the Vanier Spirits 50 - 44 in high school junior girls basketball action on Thursday evening.
The Spirits found themselves outscored in all three quarters but managed to outscore their opponents in the fourth quarter of play.
The Spirits fourth quarter surge was due to winning the battles under their own net and then rushing down the floor where it often took two or three shots to make a basket.
Caronport for their part played a strong game and defensively broke up several Vanier rushes in the first three quarters of play.
On the offensive side the Cougars rebounded strongly until the fourth quarter where the Spirits went on a surge.
The quarter scores were:
First Quarter - Caronport 13 Vanier 8
Second Quarter - Caronport 27 Vanier 20
Third Quarter - Caronport 41 Vanier 28
The Spirits drew close to the Cougars with less than two minutes left in the game but found themselves unable to continue the momentum as the Cougars regained their composure and broke up the surge.
Both teams are now off in their Christmas breaks.
