Your Moose Jaw Warriors were at Westoba Place in Brandon, MB for Saturday nights game against the Wheat Kings.
Brandon, who came out looking dapper in sharp, new black and gold uniforms, was still looking for their first win of the season and there was a familiar face on the ice doing everything he could to make that happen.
Back in August, the Warriors sent 20 year old Calder Anderson to Brandon, in exchange for a conditional pick. On Saturday night they may have been regretting that decision.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second period, the Warriors coughed up a 2-on-1 rush to the Wheat Kings, Jake Chiasson raced up the right side and shuttled the puck to Anderson. Anderson roofed it over Jackson Unger’s shoulder to put Brandon up by a pair. This was Anderson’s first game and first goal with the Wheat Kings.
Marek Howell got one back for the Warriors 4 minutes later, his first this season, with a wrist shot from just inside the blue line.
The Warriors were creating plenty of opportunities and getting plenty of good looks but they just couldn’t beat Carson Bjarnason, Brandon’s impressive young goaltender, who made countless highlight saves in the game.
Moose Jaw was decisively outplaying Brandon, but the inability to level the scoring precipitated Brandon’s Evan Groening receiving a breakout pass from Rylan Roersma that left him one-on-one with Unger. Groening beat him in the right side; putting Brandon ahead 3-1.
Six minutes after that Calder Anderson struck again, this time setting Jake Chiasson up and putting three goals between the teams.
Moose Jaw didn’t exactly rollover though. They kept fighting, they the pressure on, looking for more goals but just couldn’t get through Bjarnason, who made 34 saves on the night.
The final score had Brandon winning 4-1, despite being outshot by ten shots.
Chiasson, Anderson and Bjarnason were the games 3 stars.
In the dying moments of the match, Max Wanner received a 5-Minute Major and a Game Misconduct for slew-footing an opponent.
Moose Jaw is now 2-2 on the season and will be back on the ice Wednesday, at the Moose Jaw Events Centre, where they will be playing against Saskatoon.
