City To Host Yet Another Canadian Curling Championship
If he was alive today the late great “Wild Bill” Hunter would say that Moose Jaw has become a hotbed of curling as the Canadian Curling Association has announced yet another Canadian curling championship to be held in the city.
This February Mosaic Place will host the 2020 Scotties and now Curling Canada has announced the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre will host the 2021 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship March 21 -27, 2021.
“Saskatchewan has proven to be a strong supporter of wheelchair curling in our country, and it’ll be thrilling to see this event played in the hometown of one of our most accomplished national team athletes, Marie Wright,” John Shea, Chair of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors said in a statement. “Moose Jaw has a dedicated group of fans and volunteers and I know they’ll throw their support behind the 2021 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.”
This is the second time Saskatchewan has played host to the championship with Regina hosting the event in 2016.
Moose Jaw has had its share of wheelchair curling athletes with Marie Wright, as part of Canada’s national team, capturing the bronze medal at the 2018 Paralympics in Pyeong Chang, South Korea. Moose Gibson who was part of the 2016 Canadian championship winning team for Saskatchewan will serve as chair for the event.
“I’ve had the privilege of playing in this event a number of times, but I’m truly proud to finally bring this event to Moose Jaw,” said Gibson. “Our committee has a lot of work ahead of us, but we’re ready to do that work to make this event special for the competitors and fans alike.”
Moose Jaw is no stranger to hosting national curling events having hosted the Scotties in 2015, the 2012 Canada Cup, the 1983 World Women’s Championship, the 1979 World Junior Men’s Championship and the 1994 Canadian Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships.
