Letter to the Editor: Solar Farm Beef
This letter to the editor is in response to a story we published about MackSolar receiving an extension on its agreement to purchase city land. It's a topic that was hotly disputed at last week's City Council meeting.
Here is the article in question: Solar Farm Receive Extension
As president of the Moose Jaw Radio Control club I find this article misleading in its content since, after 45 years, the Club will have to relocate as a consequence of this project and the City has/is not giving the club appropriate empathetic consideration!! The Club is/has been in limbo since this project came forward two (2) years ago and, other than an offer for another piece of land, has obtained no written compensatory agreement from the City in accordance with the Club Lease.
Considering that the RC Club members are taxpayers and have contributed significantly to the community quality of life over many years this inconsiderate treatment should not be acceptable!
Additionally, Mack Solar, as pointed out by Councillor Swanson, has yet to provide any "Business Plan" that should identify all the financial aspects of this proposal including revenues (taxes) payable to the City! His plan is simply verbal and embellished, including his agreement to move the Club! This verbal, aesthetically pleasing approach to approving a contract should not be acceptable in any agreement of this nature, but should clearly demonstrate concrete, factual benefits to the City!
Further, in my mind, the Mayor clearly demonstrated poor leadership in suggesting that Councillor Swanson's tax question was inappropriate, especially since this question had also been asked of administration at least twice during previous presentations with no clear answer!
Our City leaders should be able to provide a more insightful and pragmatic approach than this when representing Taxpayers!
Mike Dolan, President of the Moose Jaw Radio Control Club
