Reader’s Question - Are MJPS Members Ticketed While On Duty
Recent revelations that Toronto police officers on duty photo radar speeding tickets were paid by the police department had a reader asking what happens in Moose Jaw?
To find out we sent over questions to the Moose Jaw Police Service.
Question: What is the policy (policies) when it comes to members of the MJPS when it comes to members driving on duty?
Answer: Moose Jaw Police Service members, when on duty, are expected to follow the same rules laid out within Traffic Safety Act.
If a member violates the TSA when operating a vehicle outside their scope of duties the member would be responsible for the ticket the same as a member of the public.
In emergencies, the fine or ticket would be reviewed by a supervisor.
A more detailed explanation or emergency vehicles can be found within the TSA under “Emergency Vehicle”.
Question: What happens to a member who does not follow the policy (policies)? Do they pay a ticket?
Answer: Answered in Answer 1.
Question: Does the MJPS keep track of the number of photo radar tickets members receive while on the job?
Answer: Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) tickets are tracked through plate numbers as per the ASE database and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Question: Could you tell me if a member’s vehicle is recorded as speeding while in a non-emergency situation who pays for it? The member? The MJPS or is it simply voided?
Answer: If a member is caught speeding on one of 4 ASE cameras, within Moose Jaw in a non-emergency situation, it would be the member’s responsibility to deal with the ticket in the same manner as a member of the public.
