In 1980 Terry Fox set out on a journey to run across Canada to raise awareness of cancer research with a financial goal of raising $22 million - one dollar from every Canadian at the time.
Fox, who lost a leg to cancer, would run a daily marathon as far as from Newfoundland to just outside of Thunder Bay where he at the time postponed his run for medical reasons.
Sadly Fox would never finish his Marathon Of Hope as the cancer had returned and was in his lungs. Fox would pass away June 28, 1981.
While in hospital Isadore Sharp contacted Terry by telegram expressing his wishes to hold an annual run. Sharp had lost his son to cancer in 1979.
The Terry Fox Run has been held annually since 1981 and is now held in 30 countries with the Terry Fox Foundation raising over $800 million for cancer research since its inception.
