Moose Jaw Crime Severity Index Higher Than Regina And Saskatoon

It’s a statistic that the City of Moose Jaw is likely not too proud of.

On Tuesday Statistics Canada released the Crime Severity Index for Canada and Moose Jaw’s figures aren’t likely to encourage many to move to the Canada’s Most Notorious City to Get a Life.

Those statistics show Moose Jaw with a higher crime severity index than Regina or Saskatoon.

Moose Jaw has an overall crime severity index of 127.18 in 2021 an increase of 21.97 percent (see chart below).

The figure moves Moose Jaw into 27th place overall in Canada an increase in the standings of 2020 when Moose Jaw had the 59th highest Crime Severity Index.

Statistic Canada’s Crime Severity Index or CSI and Violent Crime Severity Indexes (VCSI) are weighted indexes where certain crimes are given more weight in determining the overall level of crime in the community.

For example if you were to list a petty theft as a crime in a non-weighted crime rate report it would be given the same weight as a violent crime such as a murder. Both would simply be a single reported crime. In the CSI and VCSI crimes are given different weights depending on the severity of the crime. Giving a better picture of the severity of crimes in a community.

While the metropolitan census area for Regina reported an overall Crime Severity Index of 110.9 or a six (6) percent increase.

The Saskatoon census area reported an overall Crime Severity Index of 106.0 a zero (0) percent increase from 2020.

Provincially the overall Crime Severity Index was 146.8 a three (3) percent increase from 2020. Saskatchewan reported the highest crime rate in the country.

Moose Jaw continued the upward spiral in crime with the Violent Crime Severity Index at 81.6 an increase of 16.90 percent from 2020 levels.

The Non-Violent Crime Severity for Moose Jaw was 143.26 or an increase of 23.05 percent from 2020 levels.

The Crime Severity Indexes for other Saskatchewan centres with populations over 10,000 are:

  • North Battleford’s CSI was not only the top in Saskatchewan but also nationally. North Battleford increased 11.89 percent to 480.72.

  • Prince Albert’s Crime Severity Index score with 263.44 and a Violent Crime Severity Index of 413.51.

  • Yorkton’s Crime Severity Index was 147.59

  • Estevan’s Crime Severity Index was 91.13

  • Weyburn’s Crime Severity Index was 77.34

  • Swift Current’s Crime Severity Index was 50.23.
