Donald's Fine Foods Receives $5 Million For Sow Slaughter Plant Conversion

The company that is converting a former XL Beef cow kill plant has received a $5 million interest free loan to convert the facility to a sow slaughter and processing plant.
Donald’s Fine Foods - 102119034 SK Ltd, 102050303 SK Ltd, 624533 BC Ltd, and 671392 BC Ltd - has received a $5 million interest free repayable loan under the federal government’s Jobs and Growth Fund (JGF).
The number of new jobs Donald’s Fine Foods is set to create when the conversion project is not stated in the release.
In 2020 the firm said they would be creating 100 + jobs at the new operation.
The loan to Donald’s Fine Foods - which already operates a hog slaughter and processing plant in Moose Jaw - is one of the largest investments by the federal government as part of a $26 million investment to scale up 11 Saskatchewan businesses.

The JGF provides funding to businesses and organizations to build resiliency, enhance competitiveness, create jobs, and position local economies for long-term growth.
“To succeed in the new global economy businesses need to commercialize their cutting-edge products and services to accelerate growth and create new markets.,” The Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan said in a statement.
“When those promising businesses need that extra help to achieve success, our government will be there to help. Saskatchewan’s economy is strong, and the businesses supported today are just a few examples of what makes Saskatchewan a great place to invest, do business, and grow,” Minister Vandal said in the release.
PrairiesCan is the department that diversifies the economy across the Canadian Prairies.
The plan to convert the former cow slaughter plant was announced by Donald’s Fine Foods in May of 2020. Since then extensive renovations have been carried out on the mothballed beef plant to convert it to a sow slaughter facility.
