The Terry Fox Run is an annual event held across the world where participants help raise money and awareness for cancer research. Terry Fox, who had his right leg amputated due bone cancer attempted to run across Canada from St John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The event so far has raised over $750 million far exceeding Fox's initial goals of $1 million and later $23 million (one dollar from every Canadian in 1980).

Each day Fox would run a marathon no matter how he felt or the weather. Additionally he would attend numerous events and speaking engagements daily wherever people were willing to donate money.

Fox would never complete the Marathon of Hope as the cancer which had claimed his leg returned ending the Marathon of Hope just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 mi).

Fox passed away June 28, 1981 from cancer.
