Shows Worth Checking Out
Nick Murray
Holy Wack! Between Regina and Moose Jaw ton is a ton of really great live entertainment you might want to check out this week. The MasterCard Memorial Cup at Evraz Place doesn't just bring great hockey (which is the biggest show in the province) it also brings a ton of mega ultra cool live music.
I will list all the events, chronologically, below but the times for the shows are a bit wonky, so I really recommend going directly the Memorial Cup's website for full details.
Memorial Cup Entertainment Schedule
Wednesday May 16th
2 Shadows w/ Augurium and Nine Gates @ Cloud 9
Sean Pinchin @ Bushwakker Brew Pub
Thursday May 17th
Hitch Hikers Improv Season Finale @ Artesian
The Eagles @ Mosaic Stadium - Like these guys need an introduction.
The Eagles After Party @ Revival Music Room w/ The Revival Renegades
Kara Golemba w/ Brent Nielsen @ the Capitol
Red City Radio w/ Worst Days Down and Tomorrow Starts Today @ The Exchange- Red City Radio has a cool sound. It's like punk music for grown up punks. Let's face the facts; Liberty spikes, studded leather and D.O.A patches look kind of silly on adults and this is something a lot of one-time crusty punks probably agree with. In that same regard, gutter-punk isn't something a lot of old punks listen to in their forties either. That's where bands like Red City Radio step in. It's civilized punk music. Similar to Fucked Up, Against Me! or the Gaslight Anthem. They're from Oklahoma City and currently on tour with Worst Days Down. Also playing that night will be Regina punk veterans, Tomorrow Starts Today. Check Red City Radio's latest video for "Rebels"
Friday May 18th
Ray Rawlyk @ Cask 82 - Ray Rawlyk is a staple of live music in Moose Jaw. He's played almost every conceivable venue. Now he's trying Cask 82 on for size.
Shayla Souliere @ London Belle
Rob Young @ Bearcats Lounge
Captain Tractor @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place
Montreal Rhapsody Orchestra @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place
Tequila Mockingbird w/ Code Blue @ Revival Music Room
Supersuckers w/ The Heavenly Bodies @ The Exchange
Supersuckers are southern rock legends, on a hellbound trail, in league with satan and headed straight for the infernal hellfire. Their songs are mostly all about wild women, whiskey, drugs, killing people and stuff of that ilk. What more could you ask for from a rock band? I'll go as far as saying that this might be one of the coolest shows you'll see in Regina all year, probably lots of sweat and spilled beer. The band, originally from Tucson, Arizona, is on their 30th Anniversary tour and is spending the month of May working their way across Canada. There could be a surprise in order yet, Supersuckers are also known for playing entire sets of country songs and once even appeared on Jay Leno as Willie Nelson's backing band.
Saturday May 19th
The Lincoln Loggers @ Bobby's Place (Moose Jaw) - Just look at these guys. They're a Lumberjack themed party-band. They look like fun. They are named after a fun children's toy, they've got to sound like fun too.
Sourjack w/ Audacity @ Revival Music Room
Sourjack is one of Jayson Ford's many musical enterprises. Jayson Ford is one of Moose Jaw's most cherished musical figures. Sourjack does country rock.
Monkeyjunk @ The Exchange
Strange Valentines @ London Belle
Jaecy Bells @ The Capitol
Mystyxx @ Broadway's Lounge
Cristian Moya @ Bearcats Lounge
You really ought to know who Cristian Moya is by now. He used to front Descalso, now he plays guitar and sings with Andino Suns. The guy is a freakishly talented guitar plucker. Possibly the best the city has to offer. He's playing a solo show at Bearcats Lounge, which is in the Chimney on Montague St.
The Old Gold Night Club Reunion @ Conexus Arts Centre - The Old Gold was a highly popular disco night club in Regina from the 60's to the 80's. This is the third time the Conexus Arts Centre has hosted an Anniversary. Drink some cocktails people used to drink back then, like Singapore Slings and listen to music people used to listen to back then. Should be a good night of reminiscing.
Emerson Drive, Alex Runions, JJ Shiplett and Jack Semple @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place - I thought it was strange that Alex Runions was playing an intimate show at a Rock Creek last weekend, I mean, the guy typically plays weekends at country clubs. But it all makes sense now. The Regina native is playing the Memorial Cup Party, the Rock Creek gig was probably a warm-up for this one. Technically, he's opening for Emerson Drive. Good for him. It's a weird showtime, starts in the middle of the afternoon, so scroll up to the top of this page and click the Memorial Cup's official entertainment schedule to get all the details Check out Alex's video for "If I Won the Lotto".
Sunday May 20th
The Sheepdogs w/ Big Bad Storm @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place (check schedule above) - Are the Sheepdogs any good? "I Don't Know".
Monday May 21st
Wonderland w/ Ragged Edge @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place
Tuesday May 22nd
The Alley Dawgs @ The Fat Badger
FogDog @ Memorial Cup Party - Evraz Place
