Hometown Fair Parade Dedicated To Your Heroes
The last time there was a Moose Jaw Hometown Fair there was break in the storm clouds and then rays of sunshine broke out allowing what was described as one of the best parades ever to head down Main Street.
After a two year hiatus it is something the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company is hoping to copy on (Wednesday) June 22nd at 7 pm as the parade once again takes places after a two year hiatus due to the COVID - 19 pandemic.
This year’s theme is “Salute To Your Heroes” and will focus on the people who are seen as heroes in the community.
“It is doctors, nurses, police officers, firefighters your mom and dad. Those people you look up to and see as heroes in your own lives,” George Fowler general manager of the Moose Jaw Exhibition said.
Fowler said the Fair is aiming for about 70 entries in the parade.
“We are hoping for about 70 floats and it usually takes about an hour for the parade to head down Main Street,” he said.
For anyone interested in putting a float in the parade Fowler said “it is not too late you can still enter a float.”
This is the second time the parade has charged a $25 entry fee. The fee was charged in the 2019 as well. The fee goes towards paying for the hired security the Exhibition Company has to hire to stop traffic at intersections a requirement of their insurance company otherwise the insurance costs would make the parade prohibitive.
The City requires liability insurance to hold the parade.
Volunteers can be used to organize and make sure the floats come down Main Street from the Sears parking lot at the Town and Country Mall. The parade ends on Manitoba Street.
Although it is not required the parade organizers are asking people entering floats to follow the theme if at possible.
Yet to be confirmed this year’s parade may take on a more equestrian affair as there is “the possibility of eight horses from the RCMP Musical Ride being in the parade.”
Fowler asks that children not approach the floats for safety reasons and that people having a float in the parade observe the City’s rules that nothing (including candy) may be thrown from the floats also due to safety concerns.
He said that anyone wanting to participate in the parade to go on-line to the Exhibition’s web-site and download an application. Fill it out and then bring it with the $25 fee to the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company’s office located at 250 Thatcher Drive East.
The application form is available by clicking here.
Fowler would like to remind parade attendees that the Exhibition cannot control the weather.
“Bring your lawn chairs, be appropriately dressed and if it looks like rain bring your umbrella. And be ready for some fun.
The Moose Jaw Hometown Fair runs June 23 - 26 at the Fair Grounds 250 Thatcher Drive East.
