Big Week Ahead In High School Basketball
By Robert Thomas
After the winter break seniors high school basketball once again tips off starting on Tuesday evening.
Barring any postponed games this will be the final week of the regular season for senior boys and girls basketball.
Peacock Toilers vs Swift Current Colts
February 25th 6 pm at Peacock Collegiate
The highlight of high school basketball this week is undoubtedly the senior boys Tuesday evening showdown between the Peacock Toilers and the Swift Current Colts.
This game will decide who is the regular season city league champion as the log jam in Tier One continues.
If the Peacock Toilers defeat the Swift Current Colts - something they are able to do - the top three teams in senior boys’ basketball will end up with identical 6 - 2 records.
The Senior Boys top three teams are in a dead heat as the final regular season game looms
At the present time the Cyclones sit with a 6 - 2 record while the Colts are at 6 - 1. The Toilers are at 5 - 2.
I spoke to Central Cyclones coach Barry Seaborn this week and said if the Toilers are successful it’s going to be a busy job and a lot of work for senior basketball league commissioner Stephane Gauvin to decide.
It’s a job Seaborn said he would like to see Gauvin perform.
Although he never said it are we in a situation where the decades long rivalry between Central and Peacock Collegiates has turned on its head? And are we going to see the Cyclones and their fans cheering for the Toilers?
We’ll find out Tuesday evening at 6 pm at the Peacock Collegiate Gym.
Peacock Toilers versus Swift Current Ardens
February 25th at 7:45 pm at Peacock Collegiate Gym
In a rare double feature game the senior girls league leaders the 6 - 0 Swift Current Ardens put their undefeated record up against the 1 - 5 Toilers.
This is definitely a David versus Goliath matchup but the young female Toilers have been known to carry a couple of slings all they need to find are some rocks.
It would be a major lift for the Toilers to knock off the Ardens to finish off the regular season.
South Hill Royal Falcons vs Lumsden Devils
February 25th at 6 pm at Riverview Collegiate
Tuesday evening will see South Hill host Lumsden at Riverview Collegiate.
Both teams are looking for their first win in the Tier Two playdowns to wrap up the regular season.
Vanier Vikings vs Notre Dame Hounds
February 25th at 6 pm at Vanier Collegiate Tuesday evening
The two top teams in the Tier Two playdowns will meet on Tuesday evening .
The now healthier Vikings have come alive at the right time in the season with two victories since the tiering.
Prior to dropping to Tier Two the injured and shorthanded Vikings had only won a single game.
Vanier Spirits versus Lumsden Angels
February 25th at 5:50 pm at Lumsden Gym
The 4 - 2 Spirits head into Lumsden where they hope to defeat the 1 - 6 Angels to make up ground between themselves and the 5 - 3 Central Cyclones.
Vanier Spirits versus Swift Current Ardens
February 26th at 6 pm in Swift Current
The two girls teams will play their second game in as many nights as they tipoff in Swift Current.
The game is a make up game for the February 12th game that was postponed due to the extremely cold weather.
South Hill Royal Falcons vs Notre Dame Hounds
February 27th at 6 pm in Wilcox
The final regular season game is South Hill versus Notre Dame.
Depending on what happens on Tuesday evening this game may well decide who ends up in first place in Tier Two playdowns and the tier semi-finals.
