Rumours About Demolition Of Memorial Field Strikeout

“Loose lips sink ships” an old slogan reads from the war years.

But when it comes to this Internet rumour about Memorial Field if you were hoping for a home run it’s nothing more than a strikeout.

The rumour is Memorial Field is headed for the wrecking ball. Then maybe it’s going to be turned into a butterfly enclosure to delight tourists.

The rumours circulating are endless but none of them are true.

MEMORIAL FIELD’S FACADE’S APPEARANCE HAS A WELL USED LOOK BUT THERE ARE NO PLANS TO DEMOLISH IT - MJ INDEPENDENT PHOTO

“At this point there is no talk of closing Memorial Field,” city manager Maryse Carmichael told the media at the post Council press conference.

Memorial Field - allegedly constructed as a tribute to soldiers of the world wars - has been around from at least 1946. Despite the rumours circulating it’s likely to be around for decades to come.

By all appearances the facade and bleachers have seen better days but there are no plans of knocking it down.

“We are certainly looking at the condition and assessing what needs to be done. There’s certainly no plan in shutting it down.”

Asked by the media about the plan of demolishing the bleachers Carmichael said it was one area in poor condition.

“That’s certainly one area that needs (attention). As you know we aren’t using them right now so we are looking at different options to be able to remove them or repair them.”

Asked if she thought the stories circulating were inaccurate she replied “I don’t know where it came from. It doesn’t come from City Hall.”
