Toilers Pressures Win Over Vikings
Experience versus inexperience was on display Tuesday evening and in the end the experienced Peacock Toilers senior boys team powered by the Vanier Vikings 108 - 40.
The Toilers came out strong outscoring the Vikings 34 - 14 after the first quarter.
The Toilers increased their lead to 57 - 16 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Toilers go up 85 - 32 at the end of the third quarter.
The final score was Toilers 108 and the Vikings 40.
“Yeah it was good we had a good pace. That was Vanier’s first game of the year so we knew we wanted to pressure them at the start,” Toilers head coach Troy Setter said.
“We came out we knew we wanted to put the pressure on them. We want to run so that is what we did,” Setter said.
That pressure included aggressive covering the Vikings when they threw the ball back into play during the first half.
“We knew it was Vanier’s first game so we knew they really haven’t had any pressure this year so we wanted to take advantage of that,” he said.
The Toilers used their six grade twelves and seven grade eleven players effectively to contain the Vikings.
“We played well for the most part. So we’re happy how it ended.”
“It was our first game so we have a lot to work on. A lot to iron out so we can become the team we want to be,” Vanier Vikings head coach Brody Wasmann said.
Asked about going up against the powerhouse Toilers team to start the season he said “they’re a 5A team they have lots of experience. We have four or five returning players and one guy is injured.”
“We are quite young we are quite inexperienced at the senior level and yeah it showed.”
The Vikings are set to work on boxing out first and foremost at their next practice. And taking care of the ball.”
The Vikings had 27 turnovers in the first half.
“Even if they score on half of those that’s half of their score in the first half,” he said.
The Toilers picked off many of the Vikings longer passes something Wasmann attributed to the junior level of play.
“You can get away with those in junior but when you’re playing at the senior level everything is quicker and faster and stronger,” he said.
He said the team is working on improving.
“We are going to get there. We have good players they’re athletic. They play basketball we understand it. It is just one step at a time.”
