Chinese New Year To Be Celebrated Locally

COVID - 19 may have suspended large public gatherings to allow the Chinese community to celebrate the Chinese New Year but 2023 is going to be a lot different.

Put on by the Moose Jaw Chinese Community Network (MJCCN) there is going to be a ten course meal to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.

The meal costs $40 - tickets must be purchased in advance due to the event's popularity and limited seating - and will be held Jnuary 23 at 6 pm at Jade Gardens Restaurant.

The Chinese New Year for 2023 is on January 22.

The date for Chinese New Year is decided by the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

The calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and sun and is generally 21–51 days behind the Gregorian (internationally-used) calendar.

Every year has a different animal based upon the Chinese Zodiac.

The Chinese Zodiac has 12 signs (animals) followed in the order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

Each animal has a different characteristic.

For the Year Of The Rabbit 2023 is suppose to be a year of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture. The belief is 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope.

People born in a year of the Rabbit are called "Rabbits" and are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded, and ingenious, a popular web-site predicts.

The Chinese Calendar dates back to approximately 2400 BC.
