Flyers Tie Provincial Final Series
By Robert Thomas
It was anything but a flat and slow starting team as the Milestone U18 A Female Flyers exploded on Friday evening in front of approximately 460 screaming fans against the visiting East Central Fillies in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SFHL) provincial final action.
The Flyers scored within the first 30 seconds of play and never looked back as they defeated the Fillies 5 - 1 thereby tying the best of three game series 1 - 1.
The Flyers lost a 3 - 2 heartbreaker Thursday evening in Leroy.
The Flyers came out strong and capitalized quickly against Fillies in the First Period.
The Flyers won the opening face off and rushed down into the Fillies end of the ice and came up with a quick goal.
At the 19:30 mark Sidney Ellingson scored assisted by Ember DuSomme and Nikita Halyk.
The Flyers kept up the pressure on the Fillies through aggressive forechecking and smart play along the boards and behind the Fillies net there were numerous opportunities to score which kept netminder Allie Edwards busy.
The Flyers hard work in the Fillies paid off with a two goal lead when Halyk scored at 10:56 assisted by Ellingson.
The Moose Jaw trio would figure in the Flyers third goal at 9:02 when DuSomme took a pass from Halyk after Ellingson did some hard work to get the puck. DuSomme’s shot would go over the shoulder of Fillies netminder Allie Edwards and into the net. (See photo below).
The Flyers third goal sent the packed Milestone Memorial Rink into a thunderous response.
The Second Period saw a bit of a spark from the Fillies when they scored their first and only marker.
With 2:19 left in the period McKenna Britz scored assisted by Ava Politeski.
The Third Period saw the Flyers put the game out of the reach of the Fillies.
Both teams took ten penalties combined as the game grew physical.
At the 11:28 Cara Faris scored assisted by DuSomme and Kalla Nicholas.
Faris is one of the standouts in the First Period who aggressively fought for control of the puck helping to tie the Fillies up in their own end of the rink.
The Flyers would round out the scoring at the 3:05 mark when Jordan Terry scored assisted by Jayda Donison and Kaleigh McCann.
Game Three and the deciding game in the series takes place Sunday at 4:30 pm at the Leroy Rink.
