Milestone Flyers Win Game One Of Playoff Opener
Despite their regular goaltender, Camrie Kaufmann, being away sick the Milestone Female U18A Flyers managed a 3 - 2 victory over the visiting Wood River SWT Ice Cats in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SFHL) playoff action.
Played before over 200 very loud hometown fans the Flyers were victorious in Game One of the best of three initial playoff round.
In Kaufmann’s absence Cyruss Classen was called up from the Regina Rebels U15AA to stand between the pipes for Milestone.
The First Period was a back and forth affair with no one team really dominating the affair.
Moose Jaw Maverick’s alumnus Sydney Ellingson opened the scoring unassisted at the 7:18 mark.
The Ice Cats though responded less than a minute later when Kylin Elder scored at the 6:58 mark assisted by Sommer Foley and Hailey Spence.
The First Period Shots on goal saw Milestone outshooting Wood River 9 - 8.
The Second Period saw the Ice Cats play better making the game play more even.
The Flyers though would once again take a temporary lead on a goal by Kaleigh McCann assisted by Cara Feris and Nikita Halyk.
But in a carbon copy of the First Period the Ice Cats would once again respond less than a minute later to tie things up.
Foley would score assisted by Spence at the 11:40 mark.
The Second Period shots on goal were 10 - 9 in Wood River’s favour.
The Third Period saw the Flyers take off and they dominated play outshooting the Ice Cats 16 - 5.
The game winner was scored by Moose Jaw’s Halyk at the 8:13 mark assisted by Allison Duncan and Feris.
The shots on goal total was 34 for Milestone and 23 for Wood River.
The game also saw the Flyers fifth place point getter McKenna Perras finish serving her two game suspension for a prior game misconduct and she is eligible to be in the Flyers lineup next game.
The Flyers and Ice Cats will meet again for Game Two this coming Thursday March 3rd at 7:30 pm in Lafleche.
