Moose Jaw Carpet One Mavericks Floor Visiting Regina Rebels Red
By Robert Thomas
It was a game where the visiting Regina Rebels Red used their size to hem in the Moose Jaw U15A Carpet One Mavericks but in the end it was the hometown Mavericks who skated away with a 3 - 1 victory in Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action on Saturday evening.
The visitors opened the scoring at the 12:06 mark of the First Period when Lily Metheral netted the goal by deflecting a shot past Moose Jaw Carpet One Mavericks netminder Sara UImana.
Assisting on the Regina Rebels Red goal was Abbey Domm and Cassie Gilbert.
The Second Period saw a much better Mavericks effort with the home team scoring unassisted on a long blistering wrist hand shot from the top of the left circle by defence Tristyn Smith at the 17:32.
Within a minute of the Smith goal the Mavericks found themselves penalized for two minutes on a roughing call.
Despite the Regina squad having opportunites they only managed four shots on goal during the penalty advantage and were unable to score.
Penalties did however hurt the Rebels Red team as when they were later penalized in the period the Mavericks made no mistake and tallied a powerplay marker.
Scored by Mavericks forward Morgan Loney on a deflection the shot just managed to beat Gronick as it went off of her and trickled across the goal line.
Assists went to Elizabeth Beckman and Clarissa St Pierre.
The Mavericks were penalized a second time in the second period and managed to kill the tripping penalty with the Rebels only managing to get two shots on net.
Shots on goal at the start of the final intermission saw 19 - 11 in Regina’s favour.
The Third Period saw the Mavericks scored early and get what was to be the insurance marker.
Mavericks forward Morgan Loney managed to break through three Rebels defenders from the right wing to the left wing and beating a frustrated Gronik who managed to get a piece of the shot.
Time of the goals was 19:17 with the assist going to Tayler Smith.
With 2:14 remaining in the game the Rebels took a time out and pulled their goalkeeper for the sixth attacker.
With six skaters the Rebels tried to force a goal in the Mavericks end of the ice but at the 1:01 mark they took a body checking penalty deep in the Mavericks end.
The penalty effectively killed off any chance of the Rebels having a comeback with the Mavericks easily able to kill off the clock.
Final shots on goal were 24 for the Rebels and 15 for the Mavericks.
The win gives the Mavericks a 5 - 3 - 2 record with ten (10) games played.
